The founders

AiXiliator was founded by three active physicians, whose combined experience covers clinical practice, medical AI development and the clinical research that connects them. All three still practise.

Neurosurgery · Medical AI

I’m an internationally renowned neurosurgeon and Associate Professor of Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as well as Neurosurgery. I served from 2016 to 2022 as Chief Innovation Officer at a Finnish university hospital, and among numerous groundbreaking projects, I was the clinician responsible for bringing the first AI solution into routine clinical production. I sit on the editorial board of the top-level scientific journal Neurology, advise the European Medicines Agency, and represented Finland between 2024 and 2026 on the European Academies Science Advisory Council’s working group that drafted EU-level guidance on artificial intelligence in healthcare. I have also developed together with my research team several AI algorithms designed for clinical use.

I’ve seen how far even a well-performing algorithm can remain from the bedside. Closing that gap is why we founded AiXiliator. There are few, if any, similar medical AI companies in Europe with as much knowledge and experience as we have.

Paediatrics · Healthcare systems

Until my retirement in 2026 I was Chief Officer for customer relations at HUS, the Helsinki and Uusimaa healthcare district, working on e-health, digitalisation and bringing machine learning into the daily work of clinicians. Alongside that I led Virtual Hospital 2.0, the joint e-health programme of Finland's five university hospitals, and headed the CleverHealth Network, where hospitals and companies develop data-driven health products together. Earlier in my career I spent seven years in the pharmaceutical industry, latterly as medical regulatory director for Northern Europe. I am a paediatrician and paediatric rheumatologist, and I still see patients in private practice in Helsinki.

Good technology fails in healthcare for organisational and leadership reasons more often than technical ones. That is the part I know.

Neurosurgery · Clinical research

I am a neurosurgeon and associate professor with fellowship training in interventional neuroradiology. My research covers traumatic brain injury, intracranial haemorrhage and machine learning in intensive care, across more than 200 peer-reviewed articles. In 2020 the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies awarded our group its research prize for an open-sourced dynamic prognostic model for patients with traumatic brain injury treated in intensive care.

A model is only useful once someone has worked out how it will be validated, regulated and used at the bedside. That is the work we do.
